ROS is of great value and almost immediate applicability for service robotics: in fact, the overwhelming majority of today’s service robots run on ROS. ROS-Industrial aims to transfer this value and the ease of application to industrial hardware, by developing new components, improving existing ones, but also by performing non-development work such as compiling usage and development guidelines or performing license audits.

The bigger the ROS-Industrial community and the higher its engagement in actively using and further developing it, the more business-relevant and hence successful the platform will be. What is more, ROS-Industrial end-users as well as developers need to be well-educated to make full use of the potential of ROS-Industrial.

To this end, a part of the ROSIN budget (300.000 EUR) is reserved for co-financing Educational Projects (EPs): you identify a particular project that you want to support the ROSIN educational activities with and outline a sound and sustainable plan to achieve it. If successfully evaluated, you receive 50% of the total cost to perform the work, provided that you commit to sustain the remaining 50%.

What does the process look like?

We provide two benefits to the community thanks to ROSIN funding:
the possibility to have part of their project’s cost financed, and shepherding to ensure that the content and infrastructure of the proposed project fits within the bigger ROS and ROS-Industrial education picture.

Apply

  • Download the applicant’s guide.
  • Prepare your application following the guidelines
  • Submit it

Get the funding

  • If successfully evaluated, your application will enter negotiation phase
  • A legal contract will be stipulated and signed
  • The ROSIN grant will be transferred

Receive guidance

  • During the execution of your EP, continuous monitoring will be performed by ROSIN partners.
  • This ensures a timely completion of your project. It is also a chance for you to receive guidance.

Release your contribution to the community / make it self-sustaining

  • Once the project is over, the ROSIN partner will transfer the result to the ROS and ROS-Industrial community.
  • A report on the EP will highlight its features, to further promote acceptance and use in the community.

FAQ

1How do I apply?
The submission of an EP proposal will consist of a single step process to submit the EP application to the Online Submission System managed by ROSIN.
2Do I need a partner for an EP?
ROSIN EPs target ROS-I education efforts for which there is a clear demand on the market.
Having such third parties participate in an EP proposal is a plus, but at least showing the market pull increases the chances of receiving funding.
3Which project costs can we request ROSIN EP funds for?
The ROSIN EP program plans to cover three different types of projects:
(1) Setting up training centres [up to 30.000 EUR].
(2) Software developmemt to support ROSIN trainings [up to 15.000 EUR].
(3) Generation/Improvement of training material (slides/tutorials) [up to 2.500 EUR]
4Can we cover cost of our EP that are not funded by ROSIN with other public funding sources, e.g. by another H2020 project?
Funding the part of an EP that is not covered by ROSIN through other funding or grants is fine. As far as the part funded by ROSIN is clearly specified and the ROSIN funding is used only for that part, it is okay to fund the remaining of the project from other sources, including other publicly funded projects. Just make sure to comply with the H2020 rules, for example (but not exclusively):
- Do not double fund your work (you cannot declare the cost from the same activity in two projects).
- Do not exceed the max amount you can receive from the EU according to H2020 rules.
5How much is the overhead I have to consider?
ROSIN EP funding is based on a lump-sum, you simply need to give a calculation of the costs. We are not funding any overhead. You can request funding up to the maximum amount for the type of your project.
6What are the criterions for selection of proposals?
Proposal evaluation criteria are described in the applicants' guide.
7When do we get the funding?
We plan to give out 50% of the ROSIN grant of the EP upon signature of the EP contract. The remaining funds will be given according the number of milestones:
For projects with two milestones, another 30% will be transferred upon successful completion of the first milestone, and the remaining 20% after the project ends.
For projects with three milestones, 20% will be transferred upon successful completion of milestone 1, 20% will be transferred upon successful completion of milestone 2, and the remaining 10% after the project ends.
8During the audit, what administrative documentation should be exhibited by the participants?
The participants need to submit a report, providing evidence that the project goal was achieved as defined in the proposal.
9What are the procedures for the costs reporting? Do we need to send timesheets?
You do not need to report any timesheet; after every milestone, the project achievements need to be reported on. To approve the payment upon completion of milestone 1, we are only going to look at the result, in the spirit of the lump sum mechanism. Therefore, we need a report and access to what has been done.
10For each milestone, how does the coordinator demonstrate the transfer of the costs?
The coordinator will provide copy of the bank transfers to the performers as proof of the transfer of the costs. Note that in the EP proposal it has to be detailed how much costs are needed to reach each milestone.
